My Daughters school story

My daughter, who is in year 7, had to write a short story for school (subject was a world in a pencil case) about 200 words... This is her story, just a little over 200 words, 2356 I think it is. Yes, she talks non-stop as well.

*****************

In a land far away the royal family were sitting down to a lovely breakfast of bacon, eggs, toast, cereal and pancakes. Suddenly the young princess Ally blurted out “I am bored of sitting around the palace and doing all just princess stuff. I want to go out and do something fun!” Her parents the King and Queen were astounded. “Well honey... um... you can... um... go for a Mysterious Dangerous Exciting Walk in the Palace gardens!” said the king unconvincingly. The young Princess was very annoyed. “Fine!” she said as she walked out of the room to get ready for a walk.

She had her best mini backpack which she had snuck her best swim suit into so she could go for a swim in the lake. When she arrived she noticed the water in the lake looked different. She couldn’t put her finger on what was different so she just ignored it.
She hid behind a bush and changed into her swim suit. When she was done she ran out and jumped straight in. Just at that moment her father came running shouting “Ally don’t jump in! No stop!” but he was to late the Princess looked around as she splashed down into the water below. Her father ran to the waters edge and looked desperately into the water, but he couldn’t see her anywhere. Quick as lightning the Queen came running down the path as fast as her legs would carry her. She pushed the King in and jumped in after him!
Ally landed with a giant thump. The strange thing was it didn’t hurt. Then both of her parents tumbled out of the air, straight on top of her. But strangely, that didn’t hurt either! The King and Queen quickly stood up and started fussing over her. “Mum! Dad! Stop, really I am fine!”Ally exclaimed. They stared at her as if she was mad! “Both of us just landed on you and your saying that you are fine and expect us to just let you walk away?” They were clearly confused by the idea. “Umm, yes?”Ally said in a matter-of-fact tone and got up and walked away. Her parents just followed her and watched. “So where are we?” she turned around and looked at them waiting for an answer. “well you just fell through pencil sharpening swamp and your now in the land of the Green Smash!” Ally couldn’t believe what she was hearing! “How come you never told me about this place?” While she was waiting for an answer she spotted something moving in a bush. “Hey what was that?” she went sprinting off after it. “Ally stop wait, don’t chase anything you see!” the queen yelled desperately. But it was no use Ally was gone.
Ally was running as fast as she could to keep up with whatever she was chasing. After a few minutes it began to tire and slowed down. This gave Ally an opportunity to catch up. “Hey wait, slow down. I just want to talk to you!” she was gaining on the thing. Finally she caught up to the thing when some else grabbed her by the arm and pulled her away. “Hey” shouted Ally, who was very confused, “put me down”. She turned around to see who had grabbed and was shocked to see that is was a bright green pencil! With arms, legs, face and all! “What are you?” asked Ally, very confused. “I am a pencil of course! Can’t you tell?” said the bright green pencil who was very amazed that she didn’t know what a pencil was! “Well yes I know that you’re a pencil, but I have never seen a pencil around here before and I have lived here all of my life!”
“Really? I have been around here for five hundred and one years and I have never seen you around here before!” Ally just stared at him dumb-founded. “FIVE HUNDRED AND ONE YEARS? Wait, wait, wait just let me catch up. So you’re a pencil? Your five hundred and one years old? You been here all your life as have I and you’re trying to tell me that you have never seen me around here before?” The bright green pencil just looked at her in confusion because is everything he has just said. “Well, yes? Are you sure you’re from around here?”
“Well of course I am from around here!” Ally said impatiently. An embarrassed look swept across her face as she said apologetically, “Oh, but this isn’t Slonesworth”
“You’re from Slonesworth? Did you jump into a lake? the bright green pencil interrupted. “Yes I did why?” The bright green pencil’s eyes widened and he beamed with pleasure! “Oh I know who you are now, you’re Princess Ally!” as soon as he had realised he bowed down with respect. “So this is really a land called Green Smash?”
“Oh absolutely correct, Your Majesty, this is indeed the magical land of Green Smash!”
“Okay” said Ally tentatively “Well, what was that thing you stopped me from chasing before?”
“That was the black pencil, he... he is not on our side, he is on the sharpening lagoon monsters side.”
“How come there are two sides”
“Well if you want to know that we have to go back quite a while. So let’s go find somewhere to sit... okay are we all settled lets get started... A long time ago there were no sides we were all friends. But then one day a little girl just like you jumped into the same lake think she was just going for a swim, but instead she fell through to the Green Smash. For about three weeks she stayed here with us and we had fun altogether and played games. But then one day the black pencil along with the brown pencil, the dark green pencil and the dark blue pencil decided that they were tired off doing work and thought it be good to have someone to do the work for them. They knew that the others wouldn’t do it for them so they decided that they would keep the young girl as a slave. Slowly they began to gather followers who agreed they had to do too much work. Eventually when they felt they had enough pencils they tried to kidnap the young girl! Little did they know that the rest of the land was getting curious so they sent in the dark purple pencil to spy. So when the day came that they were going to kidnap the girl the rest of the land would be ready. On that day there was a huge battle between them. But little did the bad army know that while they were battling two or three of the good army were helping the girl escape... So if I had let you go and chase a pencil after the black pencil you probably would have ended up as their slave!”
“Wow, thank you for saving me then. So is there any way I can go back to Slonesworth before I get captured as a slave?” Ally looked anxiously at the pencil and waited for an answer. “Well there might be one way? But we could not do it alone so come on and I will introduce you to the rest of our army!”
So they walked together to the secret hide-out. First the went through a maze, then through a swamp, then they battled their way rocks and boulders, next through a massive cave and last up some stone steps. By the time they actually got there Ally was so tired she could barely stand up. “Here I will get you a chair” and quick as lighting he ran off and came back with a chair and a mug off hot chocolate. “Now old chaps this is Princess Ally. She is from Slonesworth and we need to help her to get back before the bottom off the lake closes over again. Also we need to do it without the others finding out otherwise you know what they might do, don’t we? So any ideas how we can help the Princess return to her land?” The bright green pencil looked around the room hopefully. Finally the light pink pencil put up her hand “I might have an idea.” Ally’s eyes lit up, but then she remembered something very important. “would this plan be able to involve two other people because Mum and Dad followed me down here but when I chased that thing I lost them?” Everyone just looked at her in amazement! “Come on what are we sitting around here for? We have to get them before the others do come on!” and everyone rushed out the door through the security and split into groups. Ally was with the bright green pencil and the light blue pencil. “So can you tell us where you last saw them? That would be a good place to start looking. “Umm yes I last saw them at the lake after we all came here.”
All three of them started running as fast as they could. When they got to the lake the light blue pencil shouted “Hey look, footprints, do you think that we should follow them?” The others looked at him and, seemingly as one, replied “Well of course we should follow them, and we should do it fast. Come on!”
After a few hours of following them they found them, but there was bad news. When they found her parents they were being dragged by the bad army to their hideout! “Oh no, are they going to be made into slaves?” Ally asked in desperation. “Well they won’t be if I can stop it,” exclaimed the light green pencil. Light green grabbed Ally by the hand and they quickly ran off to find the other groups. The blue and green pencil sprinted up behind the army and started battling. The way they battled was a bit different to how humans battle though. They have a draw-off. They pull a topic out of the hat and then the armies choose their best drawer. So out came the hat the tossed a coin to see who would pull it out of the hat. Just as the coin was tossed the rest of the good army turned up with Ally and Light green “Good to see you back LG & Princess Ally” exclaimed the bright green pencil.
“Come on everyone, we are picking.’ The light pink pencil put her hand into the hat stirred it around, grabbed one and pulled it out. It said draw the youngest outsider. “Well that would be me, I suppose.” said Ally. “Okay then, Princess Ally you sit on that rock and whoever is picked for each side will have to draw the scene exactly! Then we will rate them both!”
So Ally went and sat on the rock. Her parents walked over as all the pencils watched warily “Ally what is happening?”
“Well they are going to battle the pencil way. The reason they are battling is because the bad army, the ones that caught you, want to keep us here as slaves. So the good army, my friends, are battling for our freedom, whoever wins gets to choose our fate!” Her parents just looked at her trying to comprehend everything that was happening. “So wait, wait let me get this straight. So if the bright green pencils team win we will get out of here?”
“Yes, exactly!” said Ally excitedly. “What are you doing just standing around, go and cheer them on! I have to stay here to be drawn”
Yellow pencil was chosen to draw for Ally’s friends, he was the best portrait drawer and Dark Blue pencil was chosen for the bad army because he was best landscape drawer. Once it was settled as the Yellow pencil vs. the Dark Blue pencil, they called on Highlighter as referee.” 3...2...1...GO!” he counted. The race was on. They would score points for various things such as the face detail, the background etc and their points will add up. You also get points for finishing first and then who ever ends up with the most points gets to make the decision. At the mid way point The princesses body and face detail were done on the Dark Blue’s drawing but on the Yellow he had done all of her body and face and was now up to the back ground. They were both looking fabulous but there was something not quite right about the Dark Blue’s drawing.
Finally about an hour later they were both finished. Every one gathered round to get a sneak peak of the masterpieces but as soon as they were done they were covered up. The two contestants and the referee went into a hidden cave. It was very quiet, everyone was trying to hear what the referee was saying but no one could hear a thing. A few minutes later Yellow pencil, Dark Blue pencil and Highlighter all came out, giving nothing away with their faces. Highlighter came forward and showed everyone the pictures. “Pencils, Humans and all other living things I give the two drawing. The Yellow pencil’s drawing is marvellous just marvellous lots of colour, lots of texture and looks exactly the same, where as the Dark Blue Pencil’s drawing was even better... (cheering from the bad army) but... it is missing one very important feature that has ruined his score. If you look at the picture closely you will realise that the princess in this picture only has one eye! So the winner is the YELLOW PENCIL! The good army cheered as hard as they ever could. Every body was hugging each other and thanking each other. The Queen, The King and The Princess stayed with the good army had a wonderful party and then everybody walked the back to the swamp and they jumped in and went back to Slonesworth.
After this day the armies were reunited back together and the royal came back to visit every week and they all lived happily ever after.
THE END (c)

  2. Wow, wow and just wow!!! I'm sure I never wrote anything as amazing as this when I was in Year 7!!! This is such a fabulous story - so full of imagination and life. I love it! It brings to mind Alice in Wonderland - which is one of my favourite stories ever!!! I love how the pencils have to battle with a drawing competition.:-) I really honestly think this is a story that, (with some work) could be published for other kids to read. I'm sure they would all relate to a story featuring good and bad colouring pencils - such an intrinsic part of their lives. And the fantasy elements are very exciting and original.

Now - we do just have to work on that conclusion... happy endings are, like, so yesterday!! :-)

Wonderful work. 9/10 (though you might have to lose a mark for going just a little over the word count lol)

Wow - what great imagination! That's just fabulous. I used to LOVE writing stories when I was your daughter's age. Make sure she keeps it up. This was great.

J was thrilled to read your comment Jayne :) She asked me to print it so she could show her teacher :)

I think a loss of 1 mark for the over word count is fair. You'd have to deduct more for what she did to her teacher after this story though. She had to do a 90-120 second oral presentation with cue cards. Her teacher asked her if she had it ready & J held up a stack of paper about 5cm thick as she asked if it was ok to go a bit over time. Then she told her teacher she was only pushing her buttons :) Cheeky girl.

Thanks Jodie :) I can't see her stopping any time soon, she's got a definite leaning towards words :)
